The first law of motion states that an object at rest/motion will stay in rest/motion unless an outside force acts upon it.
This can be easily applied to basketball. The basketball is the object staying in motion/rest. The outside forces are the players, backboard, floor and etc. The players could intrude the ball in motion by blocking it, or bring a resting ball in motion by throwing it.
For example, when a point guard is attempting a shot, the ball is in motion. It will always stay in motion unless another player blocks the shot, or the ball hit's the backboard.
Another example is when a player is dunking. The rim of the goal is at rest until the player pulls down on the rim. The rim is now in motion until the player lets go.
